Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nutritional status and its affecting factors in patients with acute stroke. Other goal of this study was to suggest some nutritional guidelines for those patients.

Methods: Data on 156 patients with acute stroke who were admitted to stroke unit in 2013 and met the inclusion criteria of the study were prospectively analyzed. For comparative analysis, we investigated the patients¡¯ National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, nutritional status using Patient Generated Subjective global assessment, and factors such as dysphagia, facial palsy, post stroke depression, and cognitive impairment. All factors were compared at the time of 2-3 weeks after stroke onset.

Results: At 2-3 weeks after admission, patients with malnutrition were 48 (30.77%) and the rest of patients were 108 (69.23%) with normal nutritional status based on PG-SGA. The factors affecting nutritional status in patients were NIHSS score, dysphagia, post-stroke depression, and cognitive impairment (all p < .05).

Conclusion: Early nutrition guideline based on symptoms relating nutrition status will be needed for acute stroke patients for managing their adequate nutrition, and it may help to apply clinical nursing in accordance with evidence based nursing.
